Master Test Anxiety, Max Performance are a series of 4 Relaxation and Guided Imagery exercises designed by Dr. Miriam Franco, a university professor, psychologist and Guided Imagery specialist. Research has demonstrated that these gentle yet powerful mind body techniques, when practiced, can help lower test anxiety, increase study skills and focus, expand memory retention and rehearsed attentiveness and teach students ways to stay calm and focused during the exam process.
The first exercise helps students experience a state of calm focus while practicing letting go of muscle tension, stress, anxiety and worrisome thoughts associated to exam taking and studying (De-Stress 101). Students are then guided to practice imagining the results they would like to have in order to stay open to these possibilities (Imagine the Possibilities) and to stimulate their minds to seek out these associations without working hard at it. The third exercise exposes them to images and felt states of inner wisdom and confidence they have experienced in the past that can be retrieved in the present when they need to re-experience them. Students are taught how to settle themselves down quickly if they become distracted, fearful or tense during study or exams. This track (Boosting Your Confidence) instills a confidence in their abilities to access their own powerful mind body tools and to become aware of their inner strengths. This process promotes self-efficacy and empowerment. The fourth exercise (Dress Rehearsal) invites students to welcome the challenge of studying and test taking as they practice techniques to expand learning, memory retention & attentive focus. They learn to engage their formidable retrieval powers while imagining studying in “their inner library”™ and mentally rehearsing taking the exam as they stay calm and overcome any obstacles with a secure, attentive resolve.
Dr. Franco’s soothing yet skilled voice, accompanied by guided imagery music, turns studying and test taking into a safe, tolerable experience that helps students learn the power of their own minds and individual ways of learning and absorbing new skills while staying relaxed and curious about the process. With practice, students let go of past stumbling blocks and pesky worries about the future and engage themselves to make the most of their study and exam process.
